American women more likely to wait until marriage before having sex

Twenty percent of Americans say they would wait until marriage before having sex with someone they’re dating, a US-wide survey by DatingAdvice.com has found.

The survey of 1,080 Americans found that women in particular are more likely to want to wait until marriage: Just over a quarter (26%) of women said they would until they tied the knot before jumping between the sheets.

In comparison, just 13% of men would hold-off until marriage.

Robin Milhausen, an associate professor of Human Sexuality at the University of Guelph commented on the survey, saying it could fit with research that suggests women have more traditional attitudes when it comes to sex, and are therefore less likely to view pre-marital sex in a positive light.

Milhausen also suggests the outcome of DatingAdvice.com’s survey could reflect a difference in the sex drives of men and women. ‘If women have lower desire for sex than men, they might be better able to put off having sex,’ says Milhausen.

How do you feel about sex before marriage? Would you want to wait until you’ve tied the knot?
