Love Your Mate – Love Your In-Laws

Tomorrow I am flying to San Diego to be a guest on a Television program talking about sex and marriage.

My husband is from San Diego, so my sister-in-law will pick me up at the airport, and then I’ll have dinner with about a dozen family members. Seeing them is always a treat for me.  I love my husband’s siblings and their spouses. Even the step-mom and step-dad are preciouspeople who always shower us with love. When any of my family comes to town, everyone gets together.

I am always sad when people bad-mouth their in-laws, because family is such a precious thing.

And some day, I will be a mother-in-law, hopefully 4 times.

When my kids grow up and get married, I hope that that their spouses love Paul and me.  (Okay, mostly I hope they love me!) When I look at Paul, and his brother and his sister, I can see one thing clearly: His mom prayed every day for the spouses those children would grow up and marry. I am inspired to do the same. We are some good spouses! Only his baby sister has yet to get married. I’m sure she will also find a mate who totally committed to her.

I’m thankful that my in-laws have a sense of humor and a love of family. I’m thankful that they love us and our children. I’m thankful that they are always there for us.

I think that one more way to love our husband is to love his family of origin.  I know sometimes our mates come to us from a painful past, but even then, we have opportunity to grow up when we give honor and love.

We bring freedom when we see that all of us are doing the best we know.
