Traditional Christmas pastimes in decline, survey suggests

Christmas traditions like playing board games and turkey dinners could be becoming less popular, according to a new study.

Over a third of people polled by the Salvation Army said that watching TV will take up the majority of the day, and 16% will have a takeaway instead of a traditional Christmas roast.

The research also showed that just 6% will take part in festive activities such as visiting Santa’s grotto or ice-skating.

But for others, festive traditions are as important as ever.

'We’re really keen to start establishing our own family traditions,' says Mel, who has two young children with her partner.

'This year we’ve bought a toy elf, and we’ve told our kids that he’s there to issue daily reports to Santa about whether or not they’ve been good girls in the run up to Christmas.

'We put him in a different place in the house each morning and the kids really enjoy waking up and looking for him.'

Other couples have adapted to their partner’s family traditions.

'My family spend most of Christmas Day watching TV, so spending time at my boyfriend’s parent’s house last year where they ban TV for the day was really weird,' says Jen.

'We spent the whole time playing games and playing with his baby cousins and then went out for a walk in the afternoon, which was quite nice actually.

'But I was pretty annoyed that I missed the Dr Who Christmas Special! It was fine though, we watched it on Iplayer on Boxing Day!'
